From Hilo Airport
- Upon leaving the Hilo Airport, turn left at the traffic light onto Kanoelehua Avenue/Highway 11 South.
- Continue on Highway 11 until you are out of town (about 5.9 miles).
- Turn left onto Keaau Pahoa Bypass Road/Highway 130 South.
- Continue for 10.7 miles to turn right on Pahoa Village Road.
From Kona Airport
- Turn right onto Queen Kaahumanu Highway/HI-19 to exit airport.
- Within a half mile, turn left onto Kaiminani Drive.
- At the top of the drive, turn left onto Mamalahoa Highway/HI-190 and continue to follow for 19.4 miles.
- Turn right onto HI-2000/Senator Daniel K Inouye Highway. Continue to follow for 45 miles.
- Stay straight to merge onto HI-2000/Puainako Street and continue for 4.7 miles.
- Turn right onto Komohana Street/HI-2000 and take an immediate left onto W Puainako Street/HI-2000 for 1.6 miles.
- Turn right onto Kanoelehua Avenue/HI-11 for 4.8 miles.
- Turn left onto Keaau Pahoa Bypass Road/Highway 130 South.
- Continue for 10.7 miles to turn right on Pahoa Village Road.
From Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
- Exit the park on Crater Rim Drive passing the Park Entrance Station.
- Turn right onto HI-11/Mamalahoa Highway. Continue for 21 miles.
- Turn right onto Keaau Pahoa Road and follow for 1.2 miles.
- Turn right onto Keaau Pahoa Road/HI-130 and continue to follow for 8.9 miles.
- Turn right on Pahoa Village Road.
Hele-On Bus
With the most passenger vehicles on any Big Island route, Hele-On Bus (http://heleonbus.org/), operated by Big Island Mass Transit, is your answer to getting around most of lower Puna without having to drive. With three separate scheduled stops in Pahoa, the drivers are happy to drop you at any convenient spot along the roadways in between stops and outside of town. It’s easy getting most destinations for a very reasonable fee and all buses are accessible to seniors and persons with disabilities and those with mobility devices. Sit back and revel in the beauty and wonder of lower Puna and don’t forget to look for whales in the winter months along the coast without having to keep your eyes on the road.
